Heaven is For Real Book/Movie Review

In conjunction with our sister site, Linked in Hollywood, please join us for our discussion on Christian Films

Hi everyone!  I hope you all had a chance to read this book.  I can see why so many people felt inspired.  How awesome would it be to know there really IS a Heaven and that we get to be with our loved ones forever, especially in a perfect, young body?!

  1. Ok, so as much as I liked the book, the story involved, I wasn't as moved as other readers. Maybe it's because I already believe in an afterlife, I felt I was just reading what I already thought to be true. Yet, I can see how how Colton's experiences could have helped others.

    1. Yeah, ITA the book was sweet and if nothing else comforting. But Colton's story did not shock me.

  2. What did you enjoy about his story? Was there anything that you were confused about or doubted? Did any of you see the film?

    1. Sorry, I could not join the discussion until today . But I''m going to see the film next week. It's still out in theaters here. I don't know how many weeks it's been but I'm hoping to catch it before it leaves.

  3. I'm not quite sure what happened to my other comment but I already believe in Heaven so it was interesting to see his experience of it.

    1. Too bad your other comment got eaten up.

I know LB's heading the discussion but this questions is for everyone. Do u think everyone has a different version/idea of what Heaven is like, I mean one that makes sense for them?

    2. great question OB!

I see Heaven similar to what Colton said/saw. I think we are all young-ish and that there are more colors and beauty than we can comprehend. I think what we have on earth is lesser, as magnificent as it is, and Heaven is another realm we cannot even begin to imagine.

As far as Jesus, I just don't see him wearing a crown. I don't think he needs one to let people know who He is. I could get there and eat my words, but I see Him in white far brighter than the sun and that alone sets Him apart. I think there are animals and plants of all kinds...What about you?

  4. Hi I finally saw the film today and I must say I had a hard time with it. I have to agree with some of the film critics. The film was filled with cliche's not a lot of dramatic tension, no real antagonist and no real climax. I just found the film too (I hate to say it) "CONTRIVED" and too worried about presenting a certain image. It seemed the producers were trying hard to sell audiences on very traditional, conservative values as ideal rather than Colton's story. And the dialogue wasn't impressive, truth be told I find it hard to believe not one curse word escaped anyone's lips during some of those trials???

    1. I love your review. Alas, I still have not seen it although I am trying very hard to find time to do so. I'm going to copy and paste Paris's comments from LIH over here regarding her review. It sounds like there was more focus on the family members and not on what Colton experienced.

I realize one cannot duplicate what Colton saw, but did they even try to show any glimpse of the other side?

  5. OB and Paris,

Why do you think this near death experience was singled out compared to other books written by people who have had the same? Because it involved a child?

  6. From Parisienne on LIH:
I’ve seen both films. Both are well done. However, with Heaven is for Real they detracted from the actual book. They took out many things that Colton experienced and centered the film around his parents relationship and also made up a storyline about Todd almost being kicked out of his church for talking about Colton’s experience. It pissed me off because I don’t remember that happening in the book. If they wanted to put a dramatic spin on it. They should have used Colton’s experience of the devil. He wouldn’t talk about the dipshit. (Devil). They could have also put in how much Jesus loves children and how Colton bugged Todd to tell the congregation about it. Seeing as there’s a lot of child abuse making the news in today’s society. That experience could have helped society to know that. Basically Colton said that Jesus loves children so much and protects them and if you want Jesus pissed at you touch a child in any negative way and see what happens.

So I was bummed that they made up a storyline when they didn’t need to.

    1. Do you know what the Burpo's thought of this film? Did they have any say?
